November 30 – La Martinière’s Girl’s School Basketball competition

Today is an especially fun day.  There are to be two basketball games at the girl’s school.  The first is between alumni and the current girl’s squad.  In order to “even” things out a bit so that the alumni would have a "chance" against the young girls they changed some of the rules.

  • Baskets by the girl’s squad are worth 1 point each
  • For the alumni:
o   Each shot taken was worth 3 points
o   If the shot ended up close to the basket it was worth 5 points
o   If they made a basket it was worth 10 points
o   They could have as many team members on the floor as they wanted at any give time (sometimes there were around 15 on the alumni team on the floor)
o   Also, the alumni could make up other rules as the game went along

During her school days Tara was the basketball team captain and later (in college) was also quite a basketball player.  Her leaderships and competitiveness showed on the court.  And she made several of the alumni baskets (we estimated that there were about an even number of real baskets made between the two teams).

It was a pretty hilarious game with the final score being 161 to 6 Alumni wins.

There was a second game between alumni from India and alumni from Nepal.  Again, they could have as many on the court as they liked and there were occasionally 15 or more on the court.  It made for something of a free-for-all, even with referees.  The scoring was different for this game.  Everything was worth 10 points and if one team scored points the other team got the same number of points…so it ended in a tie.  Couldn’t have been more fun.

They had a little ceremony afterwards and the guest of honor (couldn’t tell who she was) greeted all the players and large shield-like plaques were presented.

A great way to end our visit at the La Martinière’s Girl’s School sesquicentennial.
