December 10 – Manjuli Walks

More photos of our hotel and grounds.

Because of the demonstrations the sights we were to see today were shut down.  So instead we took a morning walk through the local village.

The start of the walk was along the Luhit River...

and we saw a number of open-billed cranes across the river.  They get their name from the fact that their bills have a gap, even when closed.

Raju, our guide, is from this village so he knew many of the people we passed during our walk.

Really long house for a large family
In the afternoon Mary spent some time sitting in the sun in the grounds of our hotel and took pictures of some of the many birds in the area.  We don't know what they are but it was fun taking pictures.

They grow a lot of mustard in the area and the mustard fields were in full bloom.  Really beautiful.

Late-afternoon we took a walk along the Luhit River where we saw many fishing nets.  The style of the nets was the same as what we saw in Vietnam and the style originated in China; hence, they are called Chinese nets.

We also saw cormorants,

a king fisher, a white crane, and some ruddy shelducks.

The walk was lovely and everything so tranquil. And the river was like glass, so calm and smooth. It was a well-polished mirror. The reflections were incredible.
The fishermen were out checking nets and poling their way home for the evening. We walked as far as the nearby bridge. It too was beautifully reflected in the water. And the sunset was amazing.

This was a truly wonderful day. Food for the soul.

The river was extremely calm and was as smooth as a mirror.  So, we had wonderful reflections.

We walked as far as a bridge...
where we got more great reflections of the bridge.

The sunset over the river was pretty spectacular.

This evening Tara arranged to the hotel set up a bonfire and have a local cultural group come and give us a performance.  We were joined by a couple from the Netherlands that we had talked with earlier in the day.  We all very much enjoyed the performance.  Good thing we had a nice bonfire because if was pretty chilly.

Between the dances even the dancers huddled around the fire to warm up.

Great day.
